Ash and Bone review

The McKinleys

Ash and bones

So there are times in everyone’s life when people come to us that we didn’t know we needed. Someone who will shake things up and open your heart at the same time. This is exactly what happened when I saw Ash and Bone for the first time. I undoubtedly came across two of my favorite psychopaths in the history of horror films by accident.

Our journey begins with the Vanderbilts. The Vanderbilts are…gorgeous? wonderful? Let’s just stick with a family. Lucas(Harley Wallen), a recently widowed father, Sarah(and support), the new wife and stepmother, and Cassie(Angelina Danielle Cama), well, Cassie is kind of a slut, I got away from the big city to spend some time. Lucas hopes that a nice summer at the cabin will set Cassie on the right path. Almost immediately, Cassie tries to get herself into trouble. She goes straight to the local bar, where she meets new, seemingly older friends, Anna (Jamie Bernadette) and Tucker (Mason Heidger).

These newfound best friends come to drink and talk. Here we, the fascinated audience, learn something about the spooky McKinley House. Cassie convinces her two new friends to come see the house with her. Our Scooby gang is in for quite a surprise. But don’t worry, horror fans, it’s almost time for the heroes to show up.

The McKinleys

Enter McKinley’s. May (Erika Hovever) and Clete (Jimmy Doom) are two of the best things about this movie. These two psychos take this film a whole point further. May’s scenes are brilliant in the most disturbing way. Clete’s creepiness just makes me forget that he sounds like a pirate. What I’m trying to say is that I love these characters. If I’m honest, I supported her the whole time. In case you don’t understand it yet, to me this movie is about the Mckinleys.

May McKinley

Now, there were things I didn’t like about this film. First and foremost and at the top of the list are the Vanderbilts. When I said I stood up for the McKinleys, what I meant was that I didn’t want any survivors in the Vanderbilt family. Maybe Lucas and Sarah were okay. I felt a little sorry for them. They seemed a bit innocent about everything. If they were supposed to be the heroes in this 97-minute thriller, it was lost on me. The second thing that took me out of my immersion was the worst business owners in film history, namely the bar owner and the gun shop owner. These scenes were unrealistic and perhaps should have been left out entirely.

On the bright side, “Ash and Bone” was well filmed. I really enjoyed using the on-screen text messages to let us know we were in the middle of nowhere. The acting was passable at times, but the more intense the scene, the better everything was. The film’s MVP award goes to Erika Hovever! The soundtrack and music work was well done and gave the film that certain something.

Family drama, a troubled teenager and probably incest – what more could you want from a horror film? All in all, this is a solid horror film. I enjoyed it, especially those crazy McKinley’s. But don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself. No, really, look at it. Do it for the McKinley’s. Now available!
