Synopsis

This is not the first time that Frank and Maddie have had a phone call from their daughter in difficulty Alice. This time, however, the issues are higher – she caused a tragic car accident somewhere in the forest. While Frank and Maddie run against time to find her on the sorry section of Hallow Road, they discover that the traffic accident could be the least of their concerns.

Production

Practically a play, Hallow road takes place in what is equivalent to a single location, and the bet is paying. Anvari’s choice to confine almost all the time of execution to the front seats of a single car instills a feeling of overwhelming anxiety. While an intelligent opening sequence – the camera deriving slowly in the family kitchen – gives just enough non -verbal background before the tension arises.

Despite the self-imposed limits, production shines. The nocturnal setting linked to the car is beautifully lit, and the partition of Peter Adams and Lorne Balfe becomes a motor force which is its own, regularly increasing the dread. The details of the folk horror point to the edges, gratifying viewers with lively eyes without punishing those who lack them.

Launch and story

With such a small casting, Hallow road Lives or dies on its tracks – and fortunately, Rosamund Pike and Matthew Rhys absolutely have the screen. Pike, in particular, deserves special recognition to balance paramedical pragmatic instincts with raw maternal fear. Rhys associates it with an intensity barely contained as a father who fights to keep control.

The writer William Gillies impresses with his first feature film script, making a teniller stretched and tense with only a few minor gaps in a repetitive dialogue. But even these moments are easily forgiven thanks to power performance. The script embraces the claustrophobic framework, transforming a car confined into a crucible of fear and despair.
